How to Get a Texas Driver License as a New Immigrant in DFW
New to Texas? You have 90 days to swap your license. Here is what Arab newcomers in Dallas–Fort Worth need to bring, what it costs, and how to skip the long lines.
Moving to Dallas–Fort Worth comes with a long to-do list, and a Texas driver license sits near the top. New residents have 90 days after moving to Texas to get one, and the process is very doable once you know what to bring.
What you need to bring
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) requires every applicant to show:
- Proof of identity — for many newcomers this is a foreign passport with a visa and I-94
- Proof of lawful presence in the United States
- Two proofs of Texas residency dated within 90 days, such as a utility bill or lease agreement
- A Social Security number, or an affidavit if you are not eligible for one
- Proof of vehicle registration and insurance if you own a car
The tests
First-time applicants take a knowledge exam and a driving test. Good news for Arabic speakers: the knowledge exam is offered in several languages, including Arabic. Before the driving test you must also complete the free Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) video course.
Cost and appointments
A standard Class C license costs $33. Book your visit online through the DPS appointment system — walk-ins can wait hours. The mega centers in Garland, Fort Worth, and Carrollton usually have the shortest wait times in the metro area.
